Composite doors are indeed among the lowest maintenance kinds of doors, although they, too, sometimes need a bit of care. If you had your composite doors fitted a while ago, you would probably need to slightly adjust the hinges at a certain point. This can apply to composite doors fitted just a couple of days ago, provided the installers didn’t do the job right.
We at Afforde Doors have installed thousands of composite doors and thus, have a lot of experience with hinge adjustment. Hinge adjustment is a low-effort task but we still want to share all of the steps on how to do it in this guide.
How Do You Know If You Need to Adjust Composite Door Hinges At All?
You need to do a little check-up first to determine if your composite door even needs hinge adjustment. First, open the door at the lock side. If you can clearly see that there is a gap between the frame and the door, then you’ll definitely need to adjust the hinges.
You can also place a spirit level on the top of your door and you’ll notice whether it is or isn’t standing still. If the level is not sitting properly, that’s another sign. Finally, if the mitres of your composite door don’t line up with the frame mitres, then take this as a final confirmation that you need to adjust them and get to work.
How to Adjust Composite Door Hinges?
We highly advise you first take precautionary measures to make sure you don’t hurt yourself while trying to adjust the hinge. Remove any objects close to the door such as planters or doormats and ensure that the door is in a locked position. Only then, you can start the hinge adjustment process:
- In order to be able to access the hinges, remove the door from the frame,
- Visually inspect all of the hinges so you can figure out which one(s) to adjust,
- Either tighten or loosen the screws by using a screwdriver or a 4mm Allen Key,
- Put the door frame back in place and check the hinges once more.
There is very little chance that you won’t be able to do this on your own. Typically, all you need to do is to change the height of the door by 1 or 2 mm, which will make a big difference in how your composite door stands, opens up, and closes.
